The event will be opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania H.E. Linas Linkevičius, followed by the opening of the photo exhibition “Women – Superheroes” by photo artist Ms. Neringa Rekašiūtė. The exhibition portrays women, who are victims of domestic violence, their perception by the mass media and its impact to the development of democratic communities and promotion of human rights. The panelists of the interactive discussion will also share their views on how freedom of expression could be used as an effective tool in countering hate speech, populist rhetoric and negative stereotypes in societies and what is the role of journalists in this regard. The event will gather diplomats, journalists and media actors, human rights activists and academia.
The panel of the discussion includes Mr. Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights; Mr. Edward Lucas, Publicist and Senior Editor of “the Economist”; Mr. Dainius Radzevičius, Chairman of Lithuanian Union of Journalists, member of the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania; Ms. Dovilė Šakalienė, MP, Member of Committee on Foreign Affairs, Member of Lithuanian Delegation to PACE and Mr. Justinas Žilinskas, Professor of International Law at the University of Mykolas Romeris, Associate member of the Centre of Tolerance at the Human Rights Laboratory. The discussion will be moderated by Ambassador Rytis Paulauskas.
The event will take place at Gediminas Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, J. Tumo-Vaižganto Str. 2, Vilnius, from 9:00 am untill 12:00 am, 9 December 2016. Registration of the participants will start at 8:30 am.
