The ammunition to Ukraine was transferred by the Lithuanian Ministry's of Defence Resources Management Council (RMC) decision in response to Ukrainian support requests that date back to 2014.
According to RMT decision, the Lithuanian Armed Forces donated the ammunition which does not comply with NATO standard weaponry and are no longer used in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
Based on the mutual agreement, transportation of cargo to the territory of Ukraine was organised by the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Ukrainian side committed to cover the cost of shipment.
Since Russian military aggression in Ukraine, Lithuania has actively been supporting Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity in all possible and legitimate means, including military assistance.
Lithuania has already transported weaponry elements to Ukraine, wounded Ukrainian soldiers are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation in Lithuania. Together with allies, Lithuania assists Ukraine in reformation and training of the armed forces.
By providing military assistance to Ukraine, Lithuania is within the realm of international obligations and convention, the EU and national legislation.
