The meeting discussed bilateral cooperation, prospects for its development, and plans for bilateral visits. Linkevičius extended the Head of the Palestinian mission an invitation to the Palestinian Foreign Minister to visit Lithuania. The officials also exchanged their views on the Middle East peace process. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister took interest in the political situation in Palestine, preparations for the municipal elections that are due on 8 October, called for a fight against terrorism and a renewal of a dialogue with Israel at the highest level.
Lithuania has not established diplomatic relations with Palestine. The Lithuanian Representative Office in Ramallah was set up on 15 July 2013. Most of the EU’s member states have not established diplomatic relations with Palestine.
Lithuania maintains regular and active relations with countries of in the Middle East and Palestine. In October 2013, the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made his first visit to Vilnius. The Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius visited Palestine in September 2015. The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė made a visit to Palestine in October of the same year.
Lithuania supports the two-state solution, accomplished through negotiations with Israel.
