Immediately following the events of 15 July, Lithuania strongly condemned the attempt to overthrow democracy, and expressed its strong support for the democratically elected Government and unwavering solidarity with the people of Turkey.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed that Turkey was a candidate country for EU membership and key partner, whose euro-integration efforts were consistently supported by Lithuania. As a member of NATO, Turkey plays a significant role in ensuring the transatlantic security. Turkey also significantly contributes to addressing key international threats, such as terrorism and illegal migration.
“Turkey faces some immense challenges and is currently undergoing a particularly difficult period in coping with the consequences of the failed military coup. We strongly support our ally and are ready to help. We underline the importance that the steps taken in coping with the consequences of the coup attempt be in accordance with the rule of law and international law,” said Minister Linkevičius.
