“With guns in hands, Georgians defended their freedom and sovereignty against an external aggressor in 2008. We have to admit that these lessons were not learnt in the West,” said Linkevičius.
According to Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, Georgia is one of the most active participants in the NATO-led operation in Afghanistan today. “We can firmly say that Georgia has already been acting as a true and valuable ally of NATO,” said Linkevičius.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted that Georgia had carried out and continued to implement ambitious reforms in the defence sector.
“Georgia has all the necessary instruments to prepare for its membership of the Alliance. It is now important to use them properly, to further implement political reforms and to continue this course after the election, which is to be held this autumn,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.
According to Linkevičius, Georgia’s parliamentary election will be an important step in consolidating the country’s young democracy and integrating into the Euro-Atlantic community with Western values.
