In the discussion, the High Representative and the President highlighted the collective responsibility to help ensure stability and peace in Afghanistan and the region; security and development remain intertwined challenges. While NATO Summit will tomorrow look at the commitments in support of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, the Brussels Conference will focus on political and financial support, in particular Afghan state- and institution building, sustained international support and funding, regional support for peace and improved cross-border cooperation.
The High Representative and the President also discussed the necessity to address the growing pressure of irregular migration as well as the root causes of Afghan emigration. They agreed to continue the dialogue in order address these fundamental challenges, including the effective cooperation on the return and the readmission, in full respect of human rights and in accordance with international obligations and commitments.
