Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of European Commission met today with representatives of the High Negotiations Committee's Women Consultative Committee to exchange views on developments in Syria and the political process. During the meeting, HRVP Mogherini expressed her full support for the UN-brokered talks in Geneva and the work of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), including its general coordinator Riad Hijab, as the opposition delegation at the talks. She encouraged the opposition to step up their coordination and preparations for negotiating a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict.
HRVP Mogherini stressed that conditions need to be created for serious and direct talks to agree on a credible and inclusive transitional governance. Only a real commitment on both sides of the political track can lead to an agreement. To that end, all parties to the conflict need to respect the cessation of hostilities and work to ensure secure, sustainable and country-wide humanitarian access, while also making progress on the issue of arbitrarily detained persons.
The EU is ready to accompany and support even more both the humanitarian work and the political negotiations, in full coordination with the UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura.
