EU leaders underlined that today's terrorist attack in Brussels was an attack on open democratic society. The European Union and its member states stand with Belgium in solidarity, and are united and firm in the fight against hatred, violent extremism and terrorism.

EU leaders also expressed their gratitude to the Belgian people for their generosity in hosting common European institutions in Brussels.
