Vilnius, 26 March 2017 – Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, today started operating a new route from its Vilnius base. Vilnius. On March 26, the Latvian airline airBaltic launched flights on Vilnius – Paris route. The route offers more convenient travel options for travellers from Lithuania and France. On March 27, airBaltic launched a new direct route linking Vilnius and Munich. The new route offers new travel options for travellers from Lithuania and Germany.

The 3rd “Piranha” Mechanised Infantry Company with the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion with dedicated units and vehicles left for Denmark to train as part of the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). Over 100 Lithuanian servicemembers will train responding to a violation of sovereignty of any of NATO allies together with the Guard Hussar Battalion, 2nd Brigade, Royal Danish Army, on March 25-April 11.

The amounts of Latvia's exports and imports were both smaller than those of Lithuania and Estonia in January 2017, while Estonia reported the widest trade gap among the Baltic states, according to the Central Statistical Bureau's data.

As Lithuanian and Polish government officials continue talks on synchronization of the Baltic electricity networks with continental Europe, it remains unclear when and what decision would be taken. More than 1,100 workers were killed and 2,500 injured when a building housing several clothes workshops collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, nearly four year ago. The tragedy drew attention to working conditions in the sector. The Iraqis who in December 2015 became the first refugee family relocated to Lithuania under the EU's resettlement program have lost their residence permit as they failed to return to the country from Sweden within six months.

Poland became Lithuania's first ally in its efforts to stop the construction of the Russian state corporation Rosatom's nuclear power plant in Belarus when it announced its intentions not to purchase electricity from the facility under construction in Astravyets, just 50 kilometers from Vilnius.

Over 50,000 people emigrated from Lithuania last year, in addition to nearly 14,000 in the first two months of 2017, according to the official statistics.

On March 21 military equipment of the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces arrived in Lithuania via Klaipėda Seaport to be used by the German-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battalion Battlegroup in Lithuania (based in Rukla).
