According to the President, the Gas Interconnector Poland – Lithuania, which will connect the isolated gas markets of the Baltic States with the gas market of continental Europe, is of major strategic importance to the whole region.
"Lithuania has been very successful in implementing all the projects to ensure its energy security. We built a liquefied gas terminal in Klaipėda a year ago. The construction of power links with Sweden and Poland will be completed this year. Today Lithuania has signed an agreement on the strategic gas interconnector with Poland which will bring benefits to the whole of the Baltic region," the President said.
Dalia Grybauskaitė pointed out that the GIPL would not only ensure a safe and reliable route to supply gas but would also contribute to ensuring national energy as well as transparent and fair competition in the Lithuanian gas sector.
The GIPL will be partially funded under the European Commission's special program CEF (Connecting Europe Facility), intended to finance energy and transport links. The strategic gas interconnector with a total length of more than 500 km will be completed by the end of 2019.
