Lithuania plans to contribute over 150 soldiers, the largest personnel contribution to the EUBG16-2 except for the input from the United Kingdom, for which reason a Lithuanian staff officer is assigned as the deputy commander of the group. The half-year standby in the EUBG16-2 will be carried out by an infantry company, staff officers, and military police and logistic support specialists of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The Lithuanian contribution to the rotation is also expected to include military personnel from Ukraine.
Countries contributing to the EUBG16-2 hold regular meetings to ensure an appropriate preparation for the standby period. On September 17 Vilnius hosted such a meeting arranged on the initiative of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The working group consisting of roughly 20 representatives from the EUBG16-2 contributing states addressed the assigned units' preparedness for the standby, integrity and logistical provision, and analysed drafting procedures of the international agreements that need to be in place for the EUBG16-2 project to be implemented.
This is the second time Lithuania will be on standby for a UK-led EU Battlegroup. In 2013 Lithuania contributed 120 troops to a corresponding EU combat capability led by the United Kingdom and manned by four more countries.
Lithuania also cooperates with the United Kingdom in other bilateral and multilateral defence projects. Lithuania and six other states, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway and UK, signed a letter of intent to develop a UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) at the NATO Summit in Wales in September 2014. Once the project is implemented, the UK Joint Expeditionary Force will be a very high readiness force deployable where necessary, including our region, to respond to any type of security crisis. Lithuania also plans to send military personnel to the UK force contribution to the NATO Response Force in 2017.
Lithuania also posted two delegates to the UK-based Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). ARRC elements will be deployed in Lithuania and Latvia during Exercise Arcade Fusion planned to take place this November.
A representative of the United Kingdom was assigned to the NATO Force Integration Unit activated in Vilnius this September.
