The first box junction was introduced in Vilnius this week at the intersection of Konstitucijos Avenue and Kalvariju Street. Six other box junctions will be marked by 1 September, 2015.
Vehicles are prohibited to enter box junctions even if the traffic-light is green but cars in front have not completed the planned manoeuvre. This measure is undertaken to help reduce traffic congestion, when vehicles cannot exit intersections as cars in front block them after traffic-lights change.
"The pessimistic case is that Vilnius residents will save several hundreds of hours per day, optimistically, they will save thousands of hours," Simasius told journalists on Friday.
The new rules will enter into force from 1 September. A transitional period will apply and drivers who violate the regulation will be only warned. However, after several months, the violation will be subject to a fine from EUR 28 to 86.
