It is thought that the actions of farmers might have contributed to the spread of the disease.
The latest disease outbreak occurred in three small farms in Lieponys village, Rudiskes parish. The ASF virus was detected in 5 pigs, 2 of which have already fallen as a result. ASF was not found in 2 other pigs, however, they were kept together with the infected animals, thus had to be slaughtered as a precaution. The fallen animals will be incinerated in a specifically chosen location of the village. All three farms are being cleared and disinfected.
"The situation in Trakai district is very complicated. ASF has spread in two villages and our investigation has uncovered that the virus might have been spread by farmers themselves. Yesterday we established that some people tried to hide the fact that their pigs had fallen, thus we will have to inform the law enforcement," stressed VMVT Director Jonas Milius.
The investigation found that inhabitants of the village disregarded warnings and prohibitions and inspected the fallen pigs, visited one barn after another. Furthermore, non-heat-treated feed consisting of grass and grain was used, which is one of the ways for the ASF virus to be passed on from infected wild boars.
According to the VMVT, police is now monitoring the entrance to the village. All entering and exiting vehicles are being disinfected.
