LTOU representatives highlight that with the project’s completion, the number of aircraft parking positions at Kaunas Airport has substantially increased. The expansion includes additional aircraft stands and a dedicated engine testing area. The newly developed apron covers more than 35,000 square meters and features 15 new parking positions for standard-sized (Category C) aircraft. These positions can be converted, if needed, to accommodate larger aircraft (Categories D and E) while still allowing space for standard-sized aircraft nearby.
In addition to the newly constructed and upgraded pavement surfaces, the apron is now equipped with next-generation, highly efficient LED signal lighting. Another key technical upgrade is the installation of seven modern underground electrical power systems (Ground Power Units), which will enable faster and safer aircraft servicing while reducing carbon emissions.
"We completed all works on schedule and in accordance with the construction plan set at the start of the project. The expansion of Kaunas Airport is essential for strengthening its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities and maintaining its leadership in the Baltic region. The demand for MRO services will remain high in both the near and long term, making this project strategically beneficial for the entire airport and the region," said Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lithuanian Airports.
The public procurement process for the construction contract was launched in mid-2023. The contract was awarded to HISK, which successfully carried out the expansion works.
Both the northern apron expansion and the ongoing passenger terminal expansion at Kaunas Airport are part of a broader strategy to enhance passenger handling capacity and expand aircraft maintenance service capabilities.
Kaunas Airport's growth is driving job creation in central Lithuania and generating long-term economic returns for the country. The airport remains a leader in aircraft servicing and maintenance in the Baltic region, with MRO operations already conducted by Ryanair’s subsidiary Kaunas Aircraft Maintenance Services, FL Technics, DAT, and MAAS Aviation.
The northern apron expansion project was partially funded through the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, which supports military mobility projects. CEF funding for this project amounts to €7 million.
