Seven CRRT experts deployed to Lithuania for the mission from five European Union member states: Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Netherlands and Poland. Throughout the election period they conducted cyber-threat hunting, analyzed infrastructure vulnerabilities and maintained readiness to respond to potential cyber incidents in cooperation with the NCSC team.
“Activation and deployment of CRRT experts to Lithuania for supporting European Parliament elections cyber security is an example of a successful cooperation of EU member states in the area of cyber defence, which sends a signal to hostile cyber-criminal groups to better not test neither Lithuania’s nor the EU’s resilience to cyber-threats,” – Vice Minister Greta Monika Tučkutė said.
The CRRT team also put to test the Request for Support mechanism provided by the Cyber Threat Analysis Cell of the Regional Cyber Defence Centre (part of the NCSC).
The EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) Cyber Rapid Response Teams and Mutual Assistance in Cyber Security (CRRTs) project initiated by Lithuania in 2018 is one of the most successful among the 60 PESCO projects. It is designed to prevent cyber-attacks and respond to cyber-incidents in EU member states, European institutions, European Common Security and Defence Policy missions and operations and provide assistance to partners.
The CRRT currently has 11 participating member states: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Slovenia.
