‘There is a shortage of about 400 officers in Vilnius. Realising the importance of this for safety in the city, we decided to take the decision to recruit new police officers. The first results are encouraging, and we hope that young people will choose this profession more often and decide to serve in the capital,’ says Vilnius mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
Financial motivation can be obtained after becoming a police officer. A tripartite agreement is signed between the officers, the capital city municipality and the Vilnius Regional Police Headquarters, whereby the police officers undertake to work full-time in Vilnius for at least 5 years.
If a person who has received this benefit terminates his service in Vilnius through his own fault or decision, he/she will have to return part of the benefit received in proportion to the time not worked. In the case of interruption of service due to health, pregnancy or parental leave, this requirement will not apply.
Currently, five tripartite agreements have been signed and a further thirteen are currently being negotiated and signed. Of the 18 candidates, 12 are women and 6 are men.
