During the meeting, the Lithuanian leader pointed out that the European Parliament’s position on Russia’s war against Ukraine is very important and has made a significant contribution to mobilizing the international community to support Ukraine. Gitanas Nausėda underlined the need to maintain European unity on this issue.
“It is important for the European Union to confirm its long-term financial support for Ukraine, together with partners to continue the policy of sanctions against Russia, and to find legal ways to use the frozen Russian funds as soon as possible for the reconstruction of Ukraine. We also need to work concertedly to counter the Kremlin’s attempts to rewrite history and to spread propaganda,” President Gitanas Nausėda added.
In his meeting with Roberta Metsola, Gitanas Nausėda also discussed the forthcoming European Parliament elections in June. According to the Head of State, it is important to promote the engagement of EU citizens and, as the new political cycle begins, to maintain the focus on support for Ukraine, on strengthening the defense industry, and on increasing the EU’s competitiveness.
Gitanas Nausėda awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas to the President of the European Parliament for her leadership and personal will to effectively consolidate the support of the European Parliament on key issues relevant to the European Union’s and Lithuania’s political agenda.
