On April 12 the Air Detachment conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled to intercept one IL-18 flying from the mainland of the Russian Federation to Kaliningrad via international airspace, the aircraft crew had the onboard transponder switched on, a pre-filed flight plan, and maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
On April 14 NATO fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept two SU-30s that flew into international airspace from Kaliningrad and then returned back, the flight had no pre-filed plan, their onboard transponders were switched off and the crews were not maintaining radio communication.
On April 14 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 flying from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad and then – two SU-27s flying from and back to Kaliningrad through international airspace. None of the aircraft had pre-filed flight plans, all the onboard transponders were switched off and the crews were not keeping radio contact.
