According to estimations of Lithuania Post, the new centre will enable to handle ten times more items if compared with present-day capacity.
"The premises of the new logistics centre will occupy more than 8 300 sq metres, and this makes double the size of the current mail sorting centre run by the company. This logistics centre will make an essential change to the whole collection and distribution logistics chain as the office of exchange will move from Vilnius to Kaunas. With the logistics centre located in the geographical centre of Lithuania, we can diminish the number of kilometres covered and, what is very important, set later collection times," CEO of Lithuania Post Lina Minderienė said.
According to Mrs Minderienė, Lithuania Post will lease the premises. The company is going to allocate 600 thousand litas for investments to obtain new equipment.
The logistics centre will process items sent both via post offices and couriers. In the course of one hour, couriers will be able to process more than 7 000 items (current capacity is 450 items per hour).
The number of loading docks for intercity transport will increase by 10 times, and the ones for domestic courier transport will increase by 15 times. The centre will have a modern mail sorting line and surveillance system covering the whole area. Also, there will be separate areas for mail sorting, storing, and reloading.
According to calculations of Lithuania Post, the new logistics centre will create more than 30 new workplaces. It is planned to move mail sorting from Vilnius to Kaunas in spring of 2015.
