On January 24 NATO fighter jets were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 and two SU-24 aircraft flying from Kaliningrad and back through international airspace. The IL-20 had no flight plan, its onboard transponder as off, the crew was maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre. The SU-27s had no flight plan, their onboard transponders were switched off and the crews were not maintaining radio communication.
On January 25 NATO fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 flying without the flight plan, with its onboard transponder off, not maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
On January 27 NATO fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 flying from and back to Kaliningrad through international airspace. The crew had no pre-filed flight plan, kept the onboard transponder off and were not maintain radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre. NATO fighter aircraft also intercepted one IL-76 flying from and back to Kaliningrad through international airspace. Its crew had a pre-filed flight plan, its onboard transponder was on and the radio contact was kept. Two SU-27s escorting the IL -76 had no flight plans, their onboard transponders were off, the crews established radio communication en route back to Kaliningrad.
