The President and the First Lady together with Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visited the M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art, where they saw the works of M. K. Čiurlionis and an exhibition of Lithuanian cross-crafting, a phenomenon which has been inscribed on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
“I am delighted with the close cultural ties between Lithuania and Belgium, which include the cooperation between the M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art and the Belgian art community. The historical themes captured in the works of art, the meaning of the symbols and motifs depicted help us to understand and get to know each other better, to find points of common historical and cultural ground,” the President emphasized.
Gitanas Nausėda also commended the cooperation between Kaunas and Kortrijk (Belgium), which intensified in the run-up to the European Capital of Culture 2022 events.
The first couples of Lithuania and Belgium also saw the results of the cooperation between the two cities at the joint Lithuanian-Belgian exhibition “Stories of Design Innovation: from Kortrijk to Kaunas” at Vytautas Magnus University, where 10 innovative products and services are showcased.
The artworks at the M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art were presented by Director of the Museum Diana Kamarauskienė and the Belgian journalist and writer Kurt Van Eeghem. At Vytautas Magnus University, the first couples of Lithuania and Belgium were greeted by Rector Prof. Dr. Juozas Augutis.
