“All of Europe is currently experiencing an energy crisis and is being forced to make unpopular decisions in order to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity and heat as well as the operation of industrial enterprises. In this context, we see the importance of increasing energy independence, switching to green energy and using resources more responsibly. Therefore, we will not only pursue this strategic direction, but also strive to implement both environmentally and consumer-friendly solutions faster. Vilnius aims to become a completely climate-neutral city by 2030,” says Valdas Benkunskas, Deputy Mayor of Vilnius.
In April of this year, Vilnius became one of 100 European cities that are going to implement an experimental innovation program aimed at minimizing CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Cities that are going to sign the Climate Mission City Contracts will receive the Mission Label which helps them attract additional funding from EU programs, the European Investment Bank and private investors. At the same time, Mission Cities will become opportunities to participate in research and pilot innovation projects and share their experiences with cities in all EU countries. And Horizon Europe, the EU platform for research and innovation, is going to invest EUR 350 million in mission-related innovation projects by 2023.
The public undertaking Neutralus Klimatui Vilnius, VšĮ will be responsible for the decarbonization process, planning and ensuring the implementation of solutions that promote and provide social, economic and environmental benefits, advising interested parties and representing Vilnius, a mission city, in the European Commission.
In the near future, the institution will be required to develop commitment proposals for the Climate Mission City Contract and coordinate this contract with the European Commission. In the further phases, the institution will initiate the preparation of the Vilnius City Mission Investment Plan, seek and coordinate funding required for the implementation of the goals of the Climate Cities Mission as well as coordinate the measures identified in the investment plan.
