“This is yet another measure that will help European Union countries ensure structured and consistent cooperation and protection of vulnerable gas consumers through legal commitments,” said the minister.
The main purpose of the agreement is to provide mutual assistance in cases where either Lithuania or Latvia is no longer able to ensure the supply of gas to vulnerable consumers. Vulnerable consumers are considered to be household gas consumers as well as non-household gas consumers who provide basic social services. To this end, both countries have committed to defining the terms of the gas exchange and to agreeing on the necessary technical, legal and financial arrangements.
This is the fourth agreement of its kind in Europe, which are required to sign by European Union (EU) law. Among other European countries, this document has already been signed by Latvia and Estonia, thus further ensuring energy security in the Baltic region.
