In response to Taiwan’s request, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania has been instructed to allocate, by 15 October 2021, 235900 Vaxzevria vaccine doses to Taiwan from the available and booked COVID-19 vaccines under a purchase agreement concluded on 27 August 2020 between the European Commission and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The transfer of the humanitarian aid consignments will be arranged by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
‘Global vaccines equity and solidarity is crucial in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, which, unfortunately, continues to disrupt the lives of people and countries around the world’, said Prime Minister Šimonytė.
Earlier this year, Lithuania donated 200 thousand Vaxzevria vaccine doses to Ukraine, Moldova, Sakartvelo and Armenia, and 20 thousand to Taiwan.
Lithuania is committed to further contribute to the European action - EU’s global effort to fight the pandemic. EU Member States share vaccines with third countries through the COVAX facility, which helps low- and middle-income countries to obtain vaccines, or on a bilateral basis through the EU Vaccine Sharing Mechanism.
