The current price cap will be cut down by more than half – from 45 cents to 20 cents per megabyte. Phone calls and text messages will also become cheaper, the commission said.
The cost of making calls will be 21% cheaper, but the cost of receiving calls and sending text messages will be lower by 28.5% and 25% respectively.
European mobile service providers will begin to offer their clients a special roaming agreement before they travel or, if possible, allow them to choose a local mobile provider for data services.
Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, admitted that roaming tariffs are obsolete in a single market. "By the end of this year I hope we see the complete end of roaming charges agreed," Kroes said in a statement. "The Parliament has done their part, now it is up to Member States to seal the deal," she said.
As compared to 2007, data roaming costs in 2014 are 80-90% lower at the moment.
