“Primarily, the transport sector is usually associated with infrastructure, such as roads, railway, airports and seaports. Today, however, it is faced with a new reality of the rapidly developing digitalisation and innovation, Green Deal or new generation internet connection, all of which are opening new economic horizons. The main task of the new structural department of the Ministry, Future Mobility Group, is to ensure that the Lithuanian transport sector is ahead of the innovations and is able to make use of every opportunity presented by the rapidly changing environment,” Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis said.
Innovations in communication, sustainable mobility and telecommunications are three priority areas the Group is to focus on. Taking into account the EU Green Deal targets, the Group is to concentrate on sustainable mobility, innovative and eco-friendly transport, alternative fuelling/charging infrastructure development and transport electrification. Among the Group’s targets is accelerating transport sector digitalisation by implementing e-mobility projects, launching 5G connection in transport corridors, data opening and other related tools of electronic communication.
“All around the world, this sector is currently undergoing significant changes and Lithuania needs to adapt. 5G connection, high-speed gigabit internet, digitalisation, drone usage possibilities, and self-propelled cars must become an integrated part of modern Lithuanian life,” underlines Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė coordinating activities in this area.
Beside engaging the Ministry’s specialists working in different areas, the Future Mobility Group is to involve the Ministry’s institutions, research and business organisations and social partners. The new team is to be comprised of analysts, project managers and innovation experts.
By strengthening cooperation, the Group aims at ensuring that innovations to be implemented better suit transport system needs.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications also has a Networks and International Relations Department, Water and Rail Transport Policy Group, Road and Air Transport Policy Group, Budget and Investment Department and a future Organisation Management Department.
