As reported, Lithuania agreed to authorize the sale of agricultural land to foreigners in the EU Accession Treaty. The treaty stipulated a 7 year transition period allowing suspending the sale of land to foreigners until May 2011. Later, the agreement with the European Commission was reached extending the suspension to May 2014.
An initiative group, which does not approve it, has gathered over 300,000 signatures to initiate a referendum over land sale to foreigners, which will take place on 29 June.
