The malfunction was recorded at around 8 a.m. and emergency power reserves in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were activated to meet Lithuania's power needs. The Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant is generating 400MW and Latvia and Estonia are providing 100MW each.
An expert group from Litgrid is looking into the causes of this incident.
The last time the cable did not work was in the fall of 2018 when warranty repairs were carried out.
