In 2013, there were 85 road deaths in Lithuania per million inhabitants, in 2010 – 103 and in 2001 – 202.
As compared to the EU average (52 road deaths per million inhabitants), the number of the road fatalities in Lithuania remains high.
Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Croatia, Greece and other member states that have made the progress but whose fatal road accident statistics – higher than the EU average are encouraged to intensify the efforts.
Estonia is European Union average in traffic safety, Public Broadcasting cites a fresh report.
An average of 52 people died in traffic per one million inhabitants in the EU last year; in Estonia the indicator was 61 and Estonia shared the 15-16th position in the list with Slovenia.
The number of traffic deaths fell considerably last year on European roads, for the second year in a row. According to initial data, the number of traffic deaths in the EU fell by 8%, in Estonia by 7%.
Starting 2010, the number of traffic deaths has fallen by 17%, meaning that around 9,000 human lives have been saved. EU's strategic aim is to reduce the number of traffic deaths in 2010–2020 by a half.
