MILES acquisition and instalment project will be presented at the event, military personnel will demonstrate the training capacity of the new equipment.
The Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) acquisition project for the needs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was launched in 2012 when the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania signed a contract with the U.S. Government. MILES is a product of Cubic Corporation.
Currently the first phase of the project has been completed – the acquired equipment is sufficient for training an approximately company–sized unit with an additional platoon-sized unit playing an enemy force. The phase has used approximately LTL 8m of the U.S. Foreign Military Financing funds.
Once the MILES Project is completed, an approximately battalion-sized unit will be able to carry out training at one go. Instructors of the General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre will be responsible for arranging training with MILES. The project upon its completion is estimated to be worth of approx. LTL 16m, LTL 11m of the sum is planned to be covered from the U.S. programme.
MILES is an advanced laser technology training system which allows training military personnel in conditions drawn as close to real-life situation as possible, and to organise force-on-force type of exercise.
According to Head of the Capability Planning Department of the Ministry of National Defence Lieutenant Colonel Dalius Polekauskas, apart from the training opportunities MILES is one of the essential instruments for maintaining efficiency of military units and for ensuring their interoperability and integration during joint operations.
MILES uses laser “cartridges” – i.e., eye-safe laser impulses. Training personnel and vehicles are equipped with laser sensors recording mock-injuries and hits. The system also allows following and estimating actions of every individual soldier in the fictitious battlefield.
