5 out of 10 candidate countries were elected to the Executive Council. 27 countries of the European region voted in favour of Lithuania. Along with Lithuania, Greece, Azerbaijan, Romania and Russia were also elected to represent the European region on the Executive Council. In addition, France, Italy, Portugal and Slovakia will continue to work on the Council until 2019, bedsides the Council’s permanent member – Spain.
Lithuania became a member of the WTO in 2003. Since then the country has been active in the field of global tourism policy. As the Vice-Chairman of the Regional Commission for Europe and representative of the European Region on the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability, our country has achieved a strong position within the WTO and contributes to the implementation of sustainable development goals.
The UNWTO’s headquarters are located in Madrid. The Ambassador of Lithuania to Spain Skaistė Aniulienė also serves as the Permanent Representative to the World Tourism Organization.
