In September, 433,000 passengers travelled using Lithuanian railways, by 3% less year-on-year. Local service trains transported 346,000 passengers in September 2013, by 4% less year-on-year.
In September, the number of passengers travelling on the routes Vilnius-Moscow-Vilnius and Vilnius- St. Petersburg-Vilnius decreased by 15.6% and 5.7% respectively. 7,500 and 4,000 passengers used these routes in September. The reduction is thought to be influenced by the economic situation in Russia, in recent months Russians have been travelling less frequently. The number of Russian transit train passengers in September fell by 11% year-on-year.
However, passenger numbers on the routes Vilnius-Minsk and Minsk-Vilnius are continuing to increase. In September this route to and from Belarus was used by 32,000 people or by 34% more year-on-year.
