During the Council meeting the Ministers will seek an agreement on total allowable catches (TACs) for particular regulated species such as cod, herring, salmon, sprat, plaice. This issue is very important to the Baltic Sea basin countries.
"During the Council meeting we hope to reach a final decision on matters which are very important to fishermen, consumers and the whole fisheries sector in the Baltic Sea region. We intend to fix the fishing opportunities according to the available scientific advice, ensure environmentally and economically sustainable fisheries and give clear fishing guidance for 2014," noted Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture prof. Vigilijus Jukna.
The Ministers will also hold an exchange of views on the annual consultations between the EU and Norway under their bilateral fisheries agreement which covers management of certain fish stocks in the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, related technical measures and exchange of fishing possibilities.
The Member States concerned will exchange views on the forthcoming Annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), scheduled for November. The decisions on the fishing opportunities, stocks management, control and enforcement measures are usually taken during the ICCAT Annual meetings.
