In more than two and a half months the self-service system Cyclocity was used by 5,120 seasonal users who took 104,337 trips. The same system operates in Paris, Brussels, Dublin and another 64 cities.
204-208 bicycles were available with the average 7 daily riders per bicycle. Taking into account the number of inhabitants and the number of bicycles available, Vilnius results were one of the best in Europe. The interested was highest in September yet it subsided in early October.
Next year company JCDecaux, the creator of the rental system, will increase the number of bicycles to 300 available in 36 rental spots.
The system which cost JCDecaux Lietuva LTL 20 million (EUR 5.8 million) is the first such in Eastern Europe.
The idea of public bicycles in Vilnius is not a new one, for the first time it was introduced in 2001 by Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas but was unsuccessful.
