In Lithuanian capital Vilnius, the visiting Danish Crown Prince Frederic and Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas went for a guided tour on bicycles, the means of transport already hugely popular in Denmark and now multiplying in Lithuania. While Copenhagen, the residence of the Crown Prince, holds 400 kilometres of bicycle paths, and the joke says that the Danish capital has more bicycles than inhabitants, Vilnius at the moment has over 5.000 unique cyclers (Prince Frederic as one of them), and the number of journeys reaching almost 105 thousand.
"Many of you can afford to buy a car, but you prefer a bike. It's a symbol of your lifestyle. We are heading the same direction," said the mayor of Vilnius A. Zuokas to the Crown Prince of Denmark.
Vilnius can already brag about rather nice numbers of cyclers as its residents are beginning to increasingly appreciate the two-wheel vehicles. In July 2013, a self-service bicycle system Cyclocity was launched in the city. On average, 7 people use one of the bikes per day, while at the same time, it is 3 in Ljubljana or Dublin.
