In the course of the opening ceremony, Mr Maciejewski has underlined that Second World War had a throbbing impact on Vilnius and its inhabitants.
- During the hostiles the City of Vilnius lost half of its citizens. If in 1941 there were 270 thousands of inhabitants, so in 1944 there were only 110 thousands. There are a lot of commemorative plates in Vilnius, for those who saved Jews during the II World War, but this table is extraordinary - stated Mr Maciejewski.
- This plate is the First place that commemorates the person which took care of Jews after the war. It was a harsh time for everyone, but it was extremely hard for the orphaned children, that were wronged by the fate. Prof Rebelski extended a helping hand: he founded Jewish orphanage and school - underlined Mr. Maciejewski.
Author of the plate is Marijonas Šlektavičius.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto.
