“Lithuania as a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO is closely monitoring preparations for the process to elect the next Director-General of UNESCO. Our goal is to have the most qualified candidate or the candidate that meets the highest standard of professional competence elected as the next UNESCO Director-General,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.
In the meeting, the officials exchanged views on the most topical issues related to UNESCO’s activities, the former Egyptian diplomat and politician Khattab described to Lithuania’s Foreign Minister her own leadership vision and priorities for UNESCO’s activities.
The term of office of the incumbent UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova is due to expire at the end of 2017 and the election will take place in October-November of this year. Besides Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Iraq and Vietnam have also nominated their candidates for the position.
