At the Ministerial Segment, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Giedrius Čekuolis pointed out that nuclear safety was an integral part of nuclear safety, especially when it came to newly built and existing nuclear facilities.
The Ambassador said that only through a strict compliance with international standards for nuclear safety and security, as well as transparency, and the principles of good-neighborliness, could we ensure nuclear safety and security in our region.
According to the Lithuanian diplomat, the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence was established at Lithuania’s initiative in 2012. The center contributes to the international community’s efforts to combat nuclear terrorism and to stop illegal possession of nuclear materials. Today, this regional center successfully implements regional projects in cooperation with other international partners.
On the margins of the conference, Lithuania in cooperation with Jordan organizes a discussion on “Combating Illicit Trafficking in Nuclear and Other Radioactive Material” on 8 December. The discussion will be attended by representatives from the Radiation Protection Centre of Lithuania, the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence, and the Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate. The discussion will be moderated by the Director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Renatas Norkus.
