During his working visit in Lithuania, Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland took close interest in the implementation of Swiss-Lithuanian Cooperation Programme aiming to improve conditions for women in childbirth and for their newborn babies, to facilitate the modernisation of antiquated hospital infrastructures in Lithuanian hospitals, informs LETA/ELTA.

Burkhalter also visited the Vilnius Children's Hospital. This hospital is one of about 20 Lithuanian hospitals where Switzerland is providing support to train medical personnel, modernise the infrastructure and improve energy efficiency.

According to Lithuania's Deputy Minister of Health Gediminas Cerniauskas, Switzerland's present support has its roots in Swiss transition assistance provided during the 1990s, which brought about substantive improvements in the health of mothers and children in Lithuania and was received very positively there.

Hospital partnerships between Switzerland and Lithuania are therefore being developed and expanded as part of the project.
