"I can confirm that a pre-trial investigation into corruption deeds has been opened, procedural actions, i.e., searches, were taken at the port directorate. The chief of the infrastructure department and a Latvian citizen were detained," Romas Zienka, deputy director of the SIS told.
He refused to specify the names of the detained individuals. The post of the port's infrastructure department is held by Gediminas Zumaras who replaced Algirdas Kamarauskas last November.
Two Latvian companies are active at the Klaipeda port, namely, Latvijas Tilti and BMGS. Latvijas Tilti together with Borta construction company of the Lithuanian Kaminera group recently won a 11.7 million euro tender to deepen the Malku bay, while the consortium of BMGS and Lithuania's Hidrostatyba should reconstruct the embankments of Bega stevedoring company for 14.952 million euros.
Last November, the Special Investigation Service said that an unnamed executive of the port's directorate was suspected of corruption, i.e., abuse of powers and document forgery.
The Klaipeda seaport has staff of more than 200 people, posting nearly 25 million euros in net profit in 2015.
