According to Butkevicius, around 30 million euros will be allocated from the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (PSD) for this purpose this year.
"The average salary of a doctor would increase by around 100 euros and that of a nurse, by around 50 euros. The pay rise would not only improve the financial situation of medical workers, but, I hope, would also reduce the level of corruption in the healthcare system," he told reporters.
The prime minister said that the decision would not cause any problems with fiscal discipline.
"The PSD has above-target funds and these above-target funds increase each month. This ensures that we will not take any financial risks as to the compliance with the fiscal discipline law," he said.
According to information from the government, the average monthly salary of a doctor last December stood at 1,061 euros, and that of a nurse, at 735 euros.
