The amount requested matches the estimated loss of the sector's revenue last year due to the shutdown of the Russian market and a slump in global milk prices.
According to the Agriculture Minister, if this support were to be provided, the state would allocate a similar amount to farmers from its own resources, on top of the EU money.
"If some of that money [of the EUR 75 mln requested] was to be allocated to us, an identical amount of support would also be provided from the national budget – I've already talked to the finance minister," told Virginija Baltraitiene.
The application was submitted to the Commission in February, she said.
Brussels would also discuss a proposal to regulate milk output in the EU, she said, adding that such a measure might be opposed by Ireland, the Netherlands and Poland.
"We ask to regulate milk output in this period since some countries have increased their milk production considerably, that's why the surplus of milk is this high," the minister said.
Last September, the Commission earmarked 12.63 million euros in support to Lithuania's dairy farmers out of its 500-million-euro package to support the Union's farm sector. In addition, Lithuania paid 12.23 million euros to farmers from its budget.
In 2015, the Lithuanian dairy sector received a total of 72 million euros in support from the national budget and the European Union.
