At 2.35-50 p.m. the fighter jets scrambled from the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai to identify and intercept and an IL-76 military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace above the Baltic Sea heading for Kaliningrad Oblast from the mainland of the Russian Federation. The Russian aircraft was flying according to a pre-filed flight plan, with its onboard transponder on, and maintained communication with Vilnius air traffic control centre.
Residents of Plungė, Telšiai, and other districts of Western Lithuania might have heard supersonic boom, i.e. sounds similar to explosion caused by the aircraft that were flying at the altitude of 3km.
