The 2012 Nobel Peace Prize might have been awarded to the EU, but EP president Martin Schulz made very clear who the honour really belonged to: "This Nobel Peace Prize is for all EU citizens." He duly accepted the prize during the official ceremony in Oslo on behalf of everyone in the EU. You now have to chance to see your prize up close in Parlamentarium, the Parliament's visitors centre in Brussels, where the medal will be displayed until 6 October.

Inaugurating the exhibition, EP president Martin Schulz said: "Understand what kind of precious gift it is for all of us to live in the EU in an era of peace on a continent that was too long, too often, a continent of war, of hate, of racism, of xenophobia, of anti-Semitism."

Mr Schulz also thanked the Nobel Peace Prize committee: "It was not an easy decision you have taken, but a wonderful decision, underlining one of the most important historical steps nations on our continent ever made: creating this EU of peace which must be also a union of solidarity, a union of social justice, a union of cohesion, where countries and nations across borders are working together instead of against each other."

The medal is shown as part of an exhibition designed by the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo. It takes you from the Europe of the past, where conflicts were settled by war, to the Europe of today, where conflicts are resolved through negotiation and compromise. Visitors are able to see the medal and diploma, find out how the presidents of the European institutions view Europe's future and sign the interactive guest book.
