The landfill-type disposal facility will be built near the shutdown Ignalina plant. It will consist of three modules, each of which will have a capacity for up to 20,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste, the Lithuanian State Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) said in a press release on Wednesday.
Construction is planned to begin in mid-2016 and the facility is to be put into use in 2018.
The modules will be filled with radioactive waste for 20 years and will be then closed and kept under surveillance for the next 30 years. Restrictions on the use of the land will apply for another 70 years.
Similar landfill facilities are used in Sweden, France and Spain.
As part of the project, a buffer storage facility was built on the plant's grounds in 2013 for storing waste before it is removed to the landfill facility.
The total value of the EU-funded project amounts to almost 6.2 million euros.
