Tourism output rose by 3.5% from 2013, to 1.921 billion euros at current prices. The sector provided jobs for 43,700 people last year, which represented 4.6% of total employment in the private sector.
Last year, the number of domestic tourists traveling with at least one overnight stay rose by an annual 1.8%, while the number of trips by foreign travelers with at least one overnight stay increased by 2.5%. The number of day-trips by foreign tourists fell by 3% while the number of one-day domestic tourists increased by 2.1%.
In 2014, average spending per foreign traveler in Lithuania amounted to approximately 373 euros, while average spending per domestic tourist made up some 47 euros.
Total spending by Lithuanian tourists in foreign countries rose by 2.3% in January through September year-on-year to 626 million euros.
Spending by domestic tourists traveling inside Lithuania with at least one overnight stay and by one-day tourists increased by an annual 10.3% to 121.4 million euros, the statistics office said.
The total number of foreign trips by Lithuanian tourists grew by 2.7% to 1.467 million, including 1.178 million personal trips (up 2.3% y/y) and 288,100 business trips (up 4.3% y/y).
Spending by Lithuanians on holiday and leisure trips abroad increased by an annual 0.4% to 490.5 million euros and spending by those on business trips was up by 9.6% to 135.6 million euros.
In the third quarter alone, the number of Lithuanians traveling abroad rose by an annual 3.2% to 533,400 and the number of foreign trips increased by 4.6% to 636,200.
In July through September, the most popular destinations among Lithuanian tourists traveling abroad included Latvia (89,200, or 14% of the total number of Lithuanians who went abroad in that time period), the UK (54,300, or 8.5%) and Poland (51,200, or 8%).
