The court has partly satisfied claims filed by Edgars Cernenoks and Valerija Mizula against Maxima Latvija and Homburg Zolitude, but turned down their claim against the company Tineo. The claim filed by the third plaintiff in the case, Oksana Vilsone, was turned down.
The full ruing will be published on January 4 when the two companies will be able to appeal it.
Attorney Aldis Gobzems told reporters that he had to see the full verdict first, but it was clear that the verdict would definitely be appealed as the compensation amounts were disproportionately small.
It is good though that the court has ordered at least some kind of compensation, added Gobzems.
This lawsuit and the court's verdict continue the discussion about the value of a human life, said Gobzems, adding that the lawsuit was highly complicated.
Gobzems said he did not know why the third plaintiff's claim had been rejected by the court. Likewise, Gobzems has no information why the claims against Tineo were turned down.
Plaintiffs in the case initially claimed that the court arrest Maxima Latvija's properties worth EUR 1 million.
As reported, 54 people died and scores were injured when the roof of the Maxima supermarket in Riga's Zolitude neighborhood caved in on November 21, 2013.
