EU ambassadors today agreed the Council’s negotiating mandate on a proposal to amend the 2014-2020 home affairs funds and 2021-2027 asylum, migration and integration fund. This amendment, put forward through a fast-track process, will provide extra resources for the reception of persons fleeing the war in Ukraine.

President Gitanas Nausėda is leaving for London to attend the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit on March 14-15. The President of Lithuania and the leaders of the Baltic and Nordic countries, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands will discuss the preparations of the Joint Expeditionary Force and assistance to Ukraine.

On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Elizabeth Truss, Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom. The meeting focused on military assistance to Ukraine, the imposition of even tougher sanctions on Russia and the defense of NATO’s eastern flank.

On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with U.S. congressional delegation who is on a visit to Lithuania. The meeting focused on the strategic partnership between Lithuania and the United States as well as on the security of the Baltic region and the situation in Ukraine.

On 9 February, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė met with Mircea Geoană, NATO Deputy Secretary General, and Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the NATO Military Committee to discuss the security situation in the region, Russia’s destabilizing actions, strengthening of NATO’s defence and deterrence, and additional security measures in the eastern part of the Alliance.
