According to the President, the invitation to start negotiations on OECD membership is an important acknowledgement of our country's long-term efforts demonstrating that Lithuania is seen as a reliable, economically developed and stable country on the international arena. Membership in the OECD – which brings together the strongest economies – will enable Lithuania to engage in important decision-making, strengthen its national economy, attract more foreign investments and increase our country's visibility in the world.
The President and the OECD delegation will discuss reforms Lithuania has to implement on the path to membership. The President pointed out that these reforms were in the interest of Lithuania; therefore, our country was ready to work closely with OECD experts. The invitation to open membership negotiations is an obligation for Lithuania to strengthen its economic competitiveness and accelerate innovations, boost youth employment, and improve the governance of state-owned enterprises.
Lithuania was officially invited to open membership talks with the OECD this past July. Only economically developed and stable countries can become members of this organization. It currently comprises 34 countries, including Germany, the United States, Australia, and others.
