'The issue of dual citizenship raises a lot of debates and controversies in the world of growing globalization. It is stated in the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania that Lithuanian citizens are not allowed to be the citizens of another country, so the aim of the referendum is to change Article 12 (2) of the Constitution and entrench the provision that a Lithuanian citizen could be the citizen of another country,' - the project initiator A. Paulauskas said.
The member of the Seimas explained that the further regulation will be provided by law. According to the current Law on Citizenship, dual citizenship is allowed for those citizens who left Lithuania before 1990 and also for those who gained citizenship of another country automatically. Those, who have dual citizenship since their birth, have to choose just one when they reach the age of majority.
'A referendum could be held during the presidential elections. As practice shows, the voter turnout in the presidential elections is the highest, so there is a high probability that the referendum will take place and people will be able to express their opinion on this issue, '- A. Paulauskas added.
For the referendum to take place, more than half of the people with the right to vote should express their opinion.
